Tip Of The Day

Whole tone scales (that spooky outer space sound) are simply a series of whole steps. ’Simple’ to explain but not simple to execute. Horn players learn them separated by a half step (starting on C and again on C#, thus they have learned them all). Bass players learn them by playing ALL dots on one string followed by NO dots the next string etc. That’s OK for visualizing them but you need to contrive a fingering. You can either ’extend’ your box covering 5 frets, or make educated ’shifts’; either way whole tone scales are cumbersome. They are also awesome! Use them over (under) any dominant7 chord (with discretion). [today’s Tip is the first of a 3 part discussion leading to the epic- Diminished Whole Tone scale. Stay tuned]
