Tip Of The Day

Bebop Scales- Again, refer to Jamey Aebersold’s Jazz Handbook (free on line at www.jazzbooks.com) for a wonderful explanation of these iconic scales. For now just consider the concept. The idea is to insert 3 chromatic half steps in to strategic points within scales you likely already know. For example, play a C major scale, but play chromatically from A to the octave. Another example is 3 chromatic half steps approaching the 5th. A beautiful example of this version is the beginning Joe Pass’s solo on Secret Love (Pablo Records), only he uses it in a descending direction starting on Bb over EbMaj7.
